Europa League and Conference League Predictions – Matchday 1

Villareal lift the Europa League

The return of the Europa League sees two difficult games for the English sides, West Ham traveling to Croatian club Dinamo Zagreb and Leicester welcoming Napoli.

The Scottish clubs will also have their work cut out, Rangers welcoming Lyon to Ibrox and Celtic travelling to Real Betis in Spain.

After coming through their qualifier against Pacos de Ferreira, Tottenham are also in action in the Europa Conference League.

A new competition introduced by UEFA to give more clubs a chance to play in Europe, Nuno Espirito Santo’s men begin the group stage with a trip to French side Rennes.

Europa League

Rangers vs Lyon (Group A)

After winning the Scottish Premiership last season, Rangers will have been disappointed not to have made it through to the Champions League, falling in the second qualifying round to Malmo.

They begin their Europa League campaign with the visit of Lyon, themselves Champions League semi-finalists in 2020.

Despite having a strong record in this competition, Steven Gerrard’s side will have their work cut out, Lyon still possessing several quality players even after losing Memphis Depay to Barcelona in the summer.

Leicester vs Napoli (Group C)

The tie of Matchday 1, Leicester begin their European campaign by welcoming Napoli to the King Power Stadium.

Like the Foxes, Napoli missed out on the Champions League places on the final day of last season.

They will provide a tough test for Brendan Rodgers’ side, as they did for Juventus at the weekend, beating the Italian giants 2-1 thanks to a late Kalidou Koulibaly goal.

With this competition being the best route for Leicester into next season’s Champions League, they will be looking to start well.

Real Betis vs Celtic (Group G)

Who knows what score this will be with Celtic playing.

Since new boss Ange Postecoglou has come in, the club have looked incredibly dangerous when attacking, but also very vulnerable defensively.

That will only be proven again away to Real Betis, the Spanish side currently sitting 9th in La Liga after a mixed start.

Dinamo Zagreb vs West Ham

West Ham’s European adventure begins with a tough trip to Dinamo Zagreb.

The Croatians are proven at this level, reaching the quarter-finals of the Europa League last season after a stunning 3-0 victory at home to Tottenham overturned a two goal first leg deficit.

The Hammers have also stalled in the Premier League in recent weeks, failing to win against Crystal Palace and then Southampton.

A draw in Croatia would therefore be a good result for David Moyes’ men.

Europa Conference League

Rennes vs Tottenham (Group G)

Tottenham begin the inaugural Europa Conference League with a trip to Ligue 1 side Rennes.

The North London club were rocked at the weekend, showing little creativity as they suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Crystal Palace.

Providing Nuno Espirito Santo picks a strong team, they should bounce back here, Rennes not as strong as Tottenham despite being in the Champions League last season.

Indeed, if the Portuguese takes this competition seriously, Tottenham have a great chance of progressing all the way to the final in Albania.
