Chelsea midfielder Jorginho has been named UEFA Men’s Player of the Year 2020-21.
The Italian, 29, enjoyed a stellar season, playing 56 times and scoring nine goals for club and country as he won the Champions League and the delayed Euro 2020.
He began this season by claiming his third European trophy in four months, lifting the UEFA Super Cup as Chelsea beat Europa League winners Villareal 6-5 on penalties.
He wasn’t the only Chelsea player to pick up an individual award: Edouard Mendy was named goalkeeper of the year after keeping nine Champions League clean sheets, and Frenchman N’Golo Kante was named midfielder of the year after winning Player of the Match awards in both semi-final legs against Real Madrid and in the final against Manchester City.
They were joined by manager Thomas Tuchel who was deservedly named coach of the year, guiding Chelsea to their second Champions League triumph after replacing Frank Lampard in January.
Manchester City’s Ruben Dias was named defender of the year, the Portuguese helping City reach their first ever Champions League final.
Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland was named forward of the year, the 21-year-old becoming the fastest and youngest player to reach 20 Champions League goals after scoring 10 goals in last season’s competition.
Elsewhere, Denmark captain Simon Kjaer and the medical team that saved Christian Eriksen’s life after the Dane collapsed during Euro 2020 were awarded the UEFA President’s Award by Alexsander Ceferin.
