Manchester City defender Ruben Dias has extended his contract with the club until 2027.
The Portugal international, 24, joined City on a six-year deal from Benfica in 2020 for around £65m.
He played 50 times for the club last season, forming a strong partnership with John Stones and becoming an integral part of the team that won the Premier League and League Cup, and reached the Champions League final.
Such was his importance, he won the prestigious Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year award, was named Premier League Player of the Season, and was nominated for PFA Player of the Year. He was also named 2020/21 UEFA Champions League Defender of the Season.
He joins Stones in extending his contract, the England international signing a new five-year deal at the beginning of August.
Dias said that “I’m very happy to sign the new deal. I have enjoyed every single minute of my time at City since joining last year.
“Playing for City has surpassed all my expectations and it’s an absolute pleasure to be part of such an incredible squad.
I would also like to thank Pep [Guardiola] and the coaching staff for the way they have helped me to develop as a player and keep pushing me to improve.
Now I just want to try and play my part in helping us be successful this season and beyond.”
Manchester City’s Director of Football Txiki Begiristain added that “Reuben’s new deal is great news for our club.
“Although he only joined us less than a year ago, in that time Reuben has already proved to be such a vital part of our squad.
He is everything you would want in a central defender and so much more and he will be a big part of our drive to bring even more success to the club over the next few years.”
