Manchester United have agreed a deal to sign Cristiano Ronaldo from Juventus for £20m.
The Portugal captain, 36, had made clear his intentions of leaving the Italian giants, asking manager Massimo Allegri to not start him against Udinese last Sunday, telling the club he wanted to leave yesterday, and then flying to Portugal today after saying goodbye to his teammates.
It looked as though Manchester City would secure his signature, however, with Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes meeting with representatives of the club yesterday.
Yet, believing Ronaldo did not fit their recruitment policy and style of play, City pulled out of a deal today, allowing Manchester United to swoop in.
Ronaldo will therefore be returning to the club who he played for between 2003 and 2009 and where he enjoyed unparalleled success, winning three Premier League titles, the Champions League, the FA Cup, two League Cups, as well as his first Ballon d’Or.
It represents yet another remarkable transfer in what has been the craziest window of all time, Ronaldo following Lionel Messi, Sergio Ramos, and several other superstars in moving club.
He will play under former teammate Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who said in his Friday press conference before news broke that United were in for the Portuguese that Ronaldo was “a legend of the club” and “the greatest player of all-time.”
The deal is subject to Ronaldo agreeing personal terms and passing a medical.
