Pecco Bagnaia took pole for the second consecutive race, the Italian also breaking the lap record as he did in Aragon with a 1:31.065 round his home track in Misano.
In a hectic session, the 24-year-old was 0.249 seconds ahead of teammate Jack Miller, the Factory Ducati team again securing a one-two in qualifying.
Despite a fall at Turn 1 on his final run, championship leader Fabio Quartararo completed the front row of the grid in third. 0.302 seconds behind Bagnaia, the Frenchman was still happy with his result, getting the absolute maximum out of his Factory Yamaha as he conceded that “I knew it was pole position or nothing and this time it was nothing. I pushed too much on the limit.”
Jorge Martin will start fourth, ahead of teammate Johann Zarco as Ducati secured four out of the top five starting positions.
Marc Marquez and Aleix Espargaro both would have been on the second row had they not crashed when following Bagnaia, Marquez losing the front for his second crash of the day and Espargaro falling at the high-speed Turn 15. They will start from seventh and eighth respectively, behind Pol Espargaro in sixth.
The Suzuki of Alex Rins will start from ninth, ahead of Maverick Vinales, the Spaniard enjoying a strong qualifying session in only his second race for Aprilia.
Reigning world champion Joan Mir endured a tough qualifying session, suffering a technical problem on his Suzuki and then having to slow for yellow flags on his fast lap. He will line up in 11th, ahead of Enea Bastianini, the Avintia Ducati rider getting through to Q2 for the second consecutive race.
Elsewhere, Franco Morbidelli failed to get out of Q1 on his return from injury. The Italian will start from 16th in his first race for the factory Yamaha team.
Valentino Rossi and Andrea Dovizioso will start from the back of the grid on their Petronas Yamahas, Dovizioso just a tenth of a second behind his compatriot as he returned to MotoGP for the first time since leaving Ducati at the end of last season.
