PL Score Predictions – Matchday 4

Ronaldo playing for Manchester United in 2006

Premier League football returns after a relatively successful international break for the home nations.

Three clubs are pointless following their opening fixtures, while Tottenham are the only club to have a 100% record.

Nonetheless, all eyes will be on Old Trafford to see if Cristiano Ronaldo makes his second debut for Manchester United after his sensational return to the club.

Crystal Palace vs Tottenham

Crystal Palace got their first point of the season away at high-fliers West Ham last time out, the impressive Conor Gallagher scoring both goals.

Tottenham, meanwhile, have started this season brilliantly under new manager Nuno Espirito Santo, underlined by his winning of August’s manager of the month award. They will be missing a few players this weekend, however, because of knocks picked up on international duty.

Palace should also be starting to understand the ideas of new boss Patrick Vieira more and more each day, meaning this fixture could produce a surprise result.

Arsenal vs Norwich

The battle of the bottom two, Arsenal have to win simply to relieve some of the pressure on Mikel Arteta. If they fail to do so, expect the Emirates to be as toxic as it has ever been.

Norwich have the capacity to cause problems to the Gunners, as they did to Leicester at Carrow Road. The question for them is whether they can take their chances.

Brentford vs Brighton

Unbeaten in their opening three games, picking up one win and two draws, Brentford have had a good start to life in the Premier League.

Despite the defeat against Everton at the Amex in their last fixture, Brighton have also started well, winning their opening two games.

This has the capacity to be a great match. Both teams play attractive football and create plenty of chances. It will also be interesting to see how Brighton cope with Brentford’s press when attempting to play out from the back.

Leicester vs Manchester City

A repeat of last month’s Community Shield, Leicester will do well to repeat the 1-0 victory they enjoyed at Wembley.

The Foxes have started this season in decent form, the 4-1 defeat by West Ham sandwiched in-between good victories at home to Wolves and away at Norwich.

City, who have recovered will from their opening day defeat to Tottenham, should nonetheless have too much quality for Brendan Rodgers’ men.

Manchester United vs Newcastle

Will Cristiano Ronaldo start? That is the question on everybody’s mind.

After joining up and training with his new teammates on Tuesday, he is sure to feature at some point in what could be a damage limitation exercise for the Magpies.

With a goal in each of his opening three games, expect Mason Greenwood to get on the scoresheet as well.

SCORE PREDICTION: 4-0

Southampton vs West Ham

Despite a late James Ward-Prowse penalty rescuing a point at Newcastle last time out, Southampton came away from the Sports Direct Arena disappointed after missing a glut of chances.

They can’t afford to have the same troubles in front of goal against West Ham, who will be looking to get back to winning ways after their own 2-2 draw at home to Crystal Palace.

Watford vs Wolves

Taking three points from their opening three games, Watford will be content with their start to life back in the Premier League.

Back at Vicarage Road this weekend, they will fancy their chances against a Wolves side that have somehow not scored yet this season.

Bruno Lage’s team have played some good football in all three of their fixtures, especially in the first half against Manchester United last time out. It is only a matter of time before results start coming for them.

Chelsea vs Aston Villa

Down to 10 men against Liverpool, Chelsea again emphasised their title credentials, deservedly coming away from Anfield with a point after a resilient second half performance.

Villa, meanwhile, have had a slightly underwhelming start by their expectations. It was always going to be difficult after losing Grealish, but having spent well to replace him, 4 points from three winnable games will be disappointing for manager Dean Smith.

They won’t be picking up points this weekend, either.

Leeds vs Liverpool

Elland Road will be bouncing for this one.

Both will be disappointed with their respective results in their last fixtures, Leeds rescuing a point at Burnley thanks to a late Patrick Bamford equaliser and Liverpool failing to break down 10-man Chelsea for the same result.

This the first game played after the European Super League announcement last season, in which the two teams played out an entertaining 1-1 draw, it could again go either way this time round.

Everton vs Burnley

Burnley have done well at Goodison Park in recent years, including a 2-1 victory in their most recent visit back in March.

They will struggle to replicate such a result on Monday night, however.

After an unbeaten start, new boss Rafael Benitez has done much to win over the Everton faithful, with new signing Demarai Gray in red hot form and looking a steal at just £1.6m.

SCORE PREDICTION: 2-0
