PL Score Predictions – Matchday 6

Lamela scored a rabona in this fixture last season

Matchday 6 sees a repeat of last season’s Champions League final, with Manchester City travelling to Stamford Bridge to play Chelsea.

Manchester United welcome Aston Villa to Old Trafford at the same time, while Newcastle travel to Watford in an important game at the bottom of the table.

There’s also the small matter of the North London Derby on Sunday, Arsenal having the opportunity to draw level on points with Tottenham after being nine points behind them just two weeks ago.

Chelsea vs Manchester City

It goes without saying that this is a massive game.

The title cannot be won here. It can be lost, however, particularly for City who would find themselves six points behind Chelsea with defeat and a game at Anfield next Sunday.

Thomas Tuchel has a brilliant record against Pep Guardiola, beating him in all three games where the two met last season, including in the Champions League final.

With all that in mind, a point would be a good result for the Premier League champions.

Manchester United vs Aston Villa

Are Manchester United capable of challenging for major trophies with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in charge?

They enjoyed a drama-filled win at West Ham in the league last Sunday, that result sandwiched in-between the chastening Champions League defeat at Young Boys and the League Cup exit to the Hammers.

Aston Villa will also take the game to United and provide a stern test, Dean Smith’s men hitting great form in their 3-0 win against Everton last weekend.

Everton vs Norwich

This is a great game for Everton to put the defeat at Villa and the midweek League Cup exit at the hands of QPR behind them.

Norwich are already in serious trouble, the only club in the league without a point after their home defeat to Watford last time out.

Leeds vs West Ham

This should be a really exciting game, as is always the case when Leeds play.

Marcelo Bielsa’s men are yet to click this season, playing some nice football in patches but also looking vulnerable defensively.

Despite being winless in three Premier League games, West Ham have looked good. They put last week’s defeat to Manchester United behind them by knocking the same team out of the League cup in midweek.

With Michail Antonio returning from suspension, and the Hammers doing the double over Leeds last season, David Moyes’ side will fancy their chances at Elland Road this weekend.

Leicester vs Burnley

Leicester have enjoyed a mixed start to the season.

Defeat at Brighton last week, albeit in unlucky circumstances with two equalisers being ruled out for offside, mean the Foxes have picked up just two wins from their opening five fixtures.

They have still faired better than Burnley, though, Sean Dyche’s team putting in some good performances but lacking quality in key moments.

Watford vs Newcastle

Just give the ball to Allan Saint-Maximin.

The Frenchman was electric in Newcastle’s draw with Leeds last week, deservedly getting on the scoresheet.

Watford have their own fantastic forward in Ismaila Sarr, the Senegal international bagging a brace in the Hornets’ 3-1 win at Norwich last weekend.

The battle of the wingers, Newcastle’s may just win out at Vicarage Road.

Brentford vs Liverpool

Brentford have taken to life in the Premier League like a duck to water, their win at Wolves taking them to 8 points from their opening five games.

Ivan Toney was the standout performer at Molineux, last season’s Championship top scorer dispatching his penalty before crossing for Bryan Mbeumo to tap home.

Toney and Brentford will have their work cut out against Liverpool, however.

The Reds have gone slightly under the radar so far, getting back to title winning form as they sit joint top of the table with four wins and one draw from their opening five games.

Southampton vs Wolves

Southampton were unlucky not to take all three points at Manchester City last Saturday, VAR surprisingly overturning referee Jon Moss’ decision to award Ralph Hassenhuttl’s team a penalty.

If they perform to the same level again this weekend, they will have too much for Wolves. Bruno Lage’s team again created chances in their home defeat to Brentford but, as has been the case for them so far this season, failed to take any of them.

Arsenal vs Tottenham

How quickly things can change in football.

Two weeks ago Tottenham were riding high at the top of the league after their perfect start, and Arsenal were a club in disarray at the foot of the table.

Fast forward a couple of fixtures and Arsenal are just three points behind their North London rivals, Mikel Arteta’s team enjoying consecutive 1-0 wins while Tottenham have suffered back-to-back 3-0 defeats.

Such is their drop in form, some Tottenham fans have already started murmuring their discontent over new boss Nuno Espirito Santo. Lose this weekend and those murmurs will get louder.

Crystal Palace vs Brighton

Brighton have enjoyed a superb start to the season, winning four of their first five games to sit in fourth place, one point off top spot.

It is just reward for their progressive style of football, Graham Potter’s men often playing well last season but failing to put the ball in the back of the net.

They face an improved Crystal Palace side in the M23 derby on Monday night. Despite defeat at Anfield last time out, Patrick Vieira’s team took the game to Liverpool, being punished for wastefulness in front of goal.

It should therefore be a close and competitive game under the lights at Selhurst Park.
