PL Score Predictions – Matchday 7

John Stones preventing the ball from crossing the line in 2019

Anfield is undoubtedly the place to be this weekend, Liverpool welcoming Manchester City in a tantalising battle of the last two Premier League champions.

With one of those two teams set to drop points, Manchester United and Chelsea will be looking to capitalise and get over their defeats last weekend, United welcoming Everton to Old Trafford and Chelsea entertaining Southampton.

Manchester United vs Everton

How big could Wednesday’s win turn out to be for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer?

The Norwegian’s team were awful for much of the game against Villareal, but still found a way to get over the line thanks to a wonder strike from Alex Telles and a last-minute winner from that man Ronaldo.

They will now be looking to put last week’s defeat to Aston Villa behind them against a team they beat 4-0 in preseason.

They won’t have it anywhere near as easy this time round, however, Everton having returned to winning ways against Norwich last week.

Burnley vs Norwich

Will this be the week Norwich finally put their 16-game losing streak behind them?

Having failed to win at Turf Moor in 15 games, Burnley are also looking to end an unwanted streak of their own.

This will probably be their best chance to do so.

Chelsea vs Southampton

So, Chelsea are beatable after all.

After being dominated by Manchester City at Stamford Bridge last week, Thomas Tuchel’s men suffered defeat at the hands of Juventus on Wednesday, leaving the German wondering what was wrong with his team.

They should return to winning ways this weekend, though, Southampton still yet to win a league game this season and missing chances galore in their 1-0 defeat to Wolves last Sunday.

Leeds vs Watford

Watford thought they’d found a winner against Newcastle last time out, only for VAR to correctly rule out Josh King’s goal for offside.

They will be up against it at Leeds.

Marcelo Bielsa’s men, who are still winless in the league, are yet to get going this season, but should still have more than enough quality for the Hornets at Elland Road.

Wolves vs Newcastle

How good was it to see Raul Jiminez back on the scoresheet last week?

His first since fracturing his skull last November, the Mexican took it beautifully, holding off Jan Bednarek before showing great composure to sit the Southampton defender down and slot the ball into the bottom corner.

Newcastle could do with someone of his calibre, Steve Bruce’s side missing several glorious chances in their draw at Watford.

Arsenal vs Brighton

Arsenal are back!

All jokes aside, it was a fantastic win against Tottenham, Mikel Arteta’s team blowing their North London rivals away with a clinical and dominant first half performance.

Brighton, by contrast, were poor on Monday night at Crystal Palace, still managing to nick a point thanks to a late Neal Maupay goal.

If they play to that standard again this weekend, they won’t be so fortunate.

Crystal Palace vs Leicester

Crystal Palace should have been out of sight at home to Brighton in the M23 derby, only for their poor finishing – a common theme so far this season – to come back to bite them.

They will be confident going into this one, however, Leicester having struggled so far this season in both the league and in Europe.

Tottenham vs Aston Villa

This is a big game for Nuno Espirito Santo.

Many Tottenham fans have already started questioning his position, especially following their harrowing defeat in the North London derby last weekend.

A few more may be doing so after Sunday, Aston Villa having hit some form after consecutive wins against Everton and Manchester United.

West Ham vs Brentford

What a game it was at the Brentford Community Stadium last Saturday, Brentford being great value for their point against Liverpool.

They will again acquit themselves at West Ham.

David Moyes’ side should have enough quality to get over the line, however, especially after good wins against Leeds and Rapid Vienna in their last two fixtures.

Liverpool vs Manchester City

After visiting Chelsea and PSG in their last two games, Manchester City end their week with the small matter of a trip to Anfield.

Having won at Stamford Bridge, however, there is not as much importance on this game; City would only find themselves 4 points behind Jurgen Klopp’s team instead of the 7 it might have been.

They will still want to get one over on their title rivals, though, especially after ending the hoodoo at Anfield last season, albeit behind closed doors.

Liverpool, who are in fine goalscoring form, will provide as tough a test as any.
